COMPANY DESCRIPTION

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

Within the Instrumentation Services and Development Division (ISDD), you will join the Mechanical Engineering Group, comprising 40 engineers and technicians in charge of the development, design, construction and testing of new scientific instruments for the ESRF particle accelerator complex and experimental stations (beamlines).

In the dedicated mechatronics lab and on the beamlines, you will contribute to the installation, start up and testing of advanced high-precision positioning devices integrating actuators, ultra-high precision displacement sensors, real-time active feedback control systems and optical systems. You will work in close relation with mechanical, control, electronics, optical and software engineers.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be the following:

Test bench preparation:

  • Acquisition and control: Use of controllers to acquire sensor signals, and programme automated tests using command interfaces;
  • Signal commissioning and analysis: use of oscilloscopes and multi-metres for rapid debugging of technical issues;
  • Optics: assembly, alignment and testing of standard optical components (interferometers, encoders etc.) and custom optical systems (microscopes, sensors, spectroscopy probes etc.). Set up and perform tests for optical system development or acceptance tests;
  • Mechanics: assembly of test set-ups;
  • Electronics: cables (specification/order/testing), implementation and configuration of electronic systems;
  • Participate in the development phase of new instrumentation.

Measurements and analysis:

  • Measurements with diverse tools and their specific software: dial gauges, micrometres, interferometres, autocollimators...;
  • Follow-up and/or perform acceptance tests (factory or site acceptance tests);
  • Use computing tools for time-based or frequency analysis;
  • Advise about improvements to implement on systems;
  • Write up reports.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • Bachelor or equivalent diploma (worth at least 120 ECTS) in physical measurements or similar Bac+2;
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience;
  • Strong skills in physical measurements are required.

The following skills and qualities are required:

  • Able to operate a complete measurement chain;
  • Data processing using Matlab or Python;
  • Good understanding of the physical parameters measured in order to be able to detect failures;
  • Deep sense of service;
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users;
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

In addition, the following skills are a real asset:

  • Block diagram programming (Simulink);
  • Interest and dexterity for high precision mechanical assembling and optomechanics;
  • Ability to quickly understand scientific requirements;
  • Any knowledge in mechatronics, metrology, mechanics or electronics will be considered an asset.
