Job Specification

Tomson Consulting works with a wide range of commercial and industrial companies, landowners, and local authorities throughout the U.K. to develop and deliver heat network and low carbon energy projects, as well as providing carbon management and ecology services to businesses including public sector and food and drink, agricultural sectors, engineering, and construction sectors. We are specialists in sustainability engineering, and heat network development, with particular expertise relating to heat abstraction from minewater. We also help our clients measure, manage, and reduce their Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions in line with the requirements of relevant international standards.

We work closely with our sister company District Eating Ltd, whose aim is to develop sustainable low carbon horticulture using recovered waste heat and CO. On occasion the two businesses work together to develop holistic circular economy solutions that span sectors, industries, and demographics. Consultants working with Tomson Consulting will occasionally get the chance to work on District Eating projects. There is potential to work on projects that will require technical design of greenhouse integration with heat networks and other energy generation plants such as EfW’s, anaerobic digestors and industrial offtakes. District Eating work often requires consideration of CO clean up and integration with heat and power systems.

We are looking for an experienced engineering professional with a flexible, practical, and ‘can-do’ attitude and excellent organisational, people and communication skills. Because Tomson Consulting is small and growing, the work will be incredibly varied. The new candidate will need to be flexible and take responsibility for supporting on the project management and delivery of heat network projects, as well as technical work packages as part of other projects we might have in progress. You must be up for a challenge and be able to use your transferable skills in a range of interesting contexts. We need an experienced engineer, able to deliver high spec project work, and support junior team members, helping them learn new skills, and providing quality assurance within the team relating to technical work.

The successful candidate will report to the Directors on a weekly basis, reporting on project progress, and depending on experience, and a desire to mentor, may be responsible for appraising junior technical staff, helping to set their KPI’s and monitoring progress as they work towards their individual and team goals. The candidate will also be required to prepare tender submissions, develop proposals, and develop new business for the Company. We need a team player with the willingness to go the extra mile and with a flair for team building.

You will apply and extend your knowledge and experience across district heating, low carbon energy, industry, horticulture, and food drink & agriculture sectors. We encourage a culture where employees can focus on their interests where possible and in line with our work and direction.

As an Energy and Environmental Engineer, your key tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Completing technical design aspects of heat network feasibility studies, and supervising and teaching technical skills to junior staff;
  • Supporting the team in conducting investigative energy assessments to identify energy and cost savings measures;
  • Identification of technical energy savings measures, specification, and cost benefit analysis for technical aspects of carbon management plans for clients. An example may be basic design of a heat recovery system in a manufacturing plant;
  • Develop custom spreadsheet calculators, models, and analysis tools;
  • Assessing low carbon and renewable energy potential at client sites;
  • Performing Measurement & Verification activities including data analysis;
  • Playing a key role in the development of Energy Master Plans and Decarbonisation Plans;
  • Deliver project designs to RIBA Stages 2 and 3;
  • Conducting energy scenario planning and techno/economic modelling analyses to support planning projects;
  • Summarising engineering analyses/results in written reports (and planning documents) and presentations that are clear, concise and of the highest quality;
  • Supporting business development activities;
  • Preparation of tender responses and applications for funding;
  • Applying for and drawing down funding, preparation of funding claims;
  • Supporting staff with technical marketing and PR activities;
  • Weekly reporting to Directors and senior staff on progress.

Essential requirements

  • At least a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline;
  • At least 2 years of heat decarbonisation experience;
  • Experience delivering carbon management and engineering projects;
  • Excellent knowledge (and related delivery experience) of property energy demand and carbon performance, thermal (heat and cooling) energy generation systems, heating system design (boilers, flues, pumps, pipework etc.);
  • Experience with decarbonisation projects;
  • Sound understanding of measuring and management of Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Understanding of and experiencing with delivering work to RIBA Stage 2;
  • Understanding of business planning, cost benefit analysis principles;
  • Exceptional organisational skills;
  • Ability to work towards, meet and exceed targets;
  • Ability to develop and maintain client and colleague relationships;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • A positive can-do attitude;
  • Passion for this work;
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal);
  • Currently holding or working towards chartership with relevant professional association(s), for example IMechE, IChemE, CIBSE, Energy Institute, IEMA etc.;
  • An open mind and an ability to solve problems.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience of completing heat network heat mapping and master planning, and feasibility studies;
  • CIBSE Heat Network Consultant;
  • Knowledge of heat network design and ability to prepare design information, including schematics, for boiler houses, energy centres, CHP, and property connections to RIBA 4;
  • People management skills, experience and proven team working experience. We need someone kind and fair, who can listen, and be honest, clear, and candid;
  • Experience of working in the agricultural/horticultural sector;
  • Experience with EnergyPro;
  • Experience with CAD or equivalent;
  • Familiarity with GIS software;
  • Accredited CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant;
  • Experience of delivering work to RIBA Stage 3 and 4.

Working arrangements

We support hybrid working. This position is based in Sheffield or Scotland, for Sheffield based staff, there is a requirement to come into the office on 2 fixed days per week, however the rest of the week staff can choose to work from home or the office, as they choose. Staff based in Scotland will have the opportunity to work with Scottish colleagues in co-working space Glasgow on an ad-hoc basis.
