Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

You will join a team of engineers and technicians in charge of developing advanced instrumentation for the ESRF beamlines and accelerator complex. These high performance mechanical engineering projects involve ultra-high precision, opto-mechanics, vacuum and cooling technologies. You will work in collaboration with senior engineers who are experts in these fields.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be to:

  • Carry out feasibility studies and mechanical design studies using computer-assisted tools for components of beamlines and for the accelerators: general layout, high stability supports, opto-mechanical devices (mirrors, monochromators), motorised precision mechanical systems, experimental sample stations;
  • Carry out engineering calculations;
  • Supervise the production of detailed mechanical drawings, and coordinate the procurement, manufacturing, test and installation phases of these equipment up to the commissioning on the beamline.

In the short term, your main mission will be to contribute to mechanical instrument projects as a member of the project team.

Your responsibilities will be in line with your own skills and experience. After an adaptation period, you will be expected to take on complete projects with full autonomy and will be the mechanical correspondent for 2 ESRF beamlines.

  • 3 years minimum of relevant professional experience;
  • Skills in mechanical design and some knowledge of engineering calculations;
  • Use of mechanical design CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks) and mechanical FEA software (Simulation/ANSYS);
  • Knowledge of high precision motorised systems and of scientific instrumentation would be an asset together with experience in project management, procurement, or manufacturing follow-up;
  • Initiative, good communication, team spirit, methodical, organised;
