IC Design Support Engineer

KU Leuven - Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT)

Leuven, Belgium

The MICAS research group in the Electronic Circuits and Systems (ECS) division of the department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), Group Science and Technology of KU Leuven is an international player in integrated circuit (IC) design research. We collaborate with both large and small electronics companies, semiconductor foundries, research institutes and other universities worldwide to advance the state of the art in chip design of analog, mixed-signal, digial, RF and mm-wave ICs, striving for improved energy consumption, performance and area footprints. We design most of our circuits in advanced silicon CMOS technologies, at this moment down to 12nm feature sizes, but also HV technologies, GaN, Flex-IGZO, etc. are part of our portfolio.

The complexity of the design methods, EDA tools and (PDK) models used in IC design increases along with the technology going to ever smaller dimensions and the circuits going to ever higher accuracy, higher frequency and lower energy requirements. To help our research team, which consists of about 65 PhD research design engineers, to cope with this growing complexity, the MICAS research group is looking for an IC design support engineer.

Responsibilities

  • You centralize the MICAS knowledge about IC design tools (EDA tools, PDKs, internal scripts) and back-end design for electromagnetic, analog, mixed-signal, digital, RF and mm-wave IC designs;
  • You centralize and summarize the knowledge about new technologies that we start using within MICAS;
  • You support (parts of a) design flow by providing documentation, good practices and scripts to the MICAS design community;
  • For selected projects, you become part of the design team, for instance to support in the synthesis, layout and/or tape-out steps;
  • The MICAS IC design support group, which consists of yourself, a few senior PhD researchers, and a MICAS staff member, determines the strategic options for your support work;
  • You are working together with an IT support engineer for the setup and maintenance of the tools and servers;
  • You interact with other support teams from Europractice, imec-ICLink, commercial EDA tool vendors and/or chip foundries.

Profile

  • You have preferably a master degree in electrical engineering. Specialization in and/or experience in (integrated) circuit design is an asset, but not a must. The position is open for both junior and senior engineers. If needed you will be trained on the job;
  • You have an interest in IC design methodology;
  • You are skilled with electronic CAD/EDA tools;
  • You are familiar with scripting. At least a basic knowledge of C and Python is a must.

Offer

  • We offer a full-time employment contract of unlimited duration in a challenging, stimulating, high-tech environment;
  • You will be part of a team that is worldwide leading in the fascinating world of IC design research;
  • For starters and junior engineers, this is the ideal job to get a head start in IC design;
  • You will be offered a competitive salary in grade 6, 7 or 8 for technical personnel at KU Leuven, depending upon your experience;
  • The KU Leuven grades for technical jobs are available at the link: https://admin.kuleuven.be/personeel/english/salary/salary_atp.html.
