Thermal Engineer, Vehicle Design Engineering

Tesla

Berlin, Germany

What You’ll Do

  • Develop the fluid dynamics aspects of our ground-breaking powertrain thermal management and HVAC systems.
  • High-level system layout and performance scoping.
  • Design and simulate the aerodynamic details of flow distribution, pump impellers, fan blades, particulate and gas filtration, water management, heat exchangers and more.
  • Develop physics based and analytical models of the thermal management and HVAC systems.
  • Mechanical design and packaging of HVAC components to meet system and vehicle requirements while optimizing for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Develop component and system level requirements based on vehicle level requirements and customer experience.
  • Lead creation of component specifications, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents.
  • Develop and execute component and subsystem design verification plans and test methods to validate produce adherence to requirements.
  • Ensure vehicles conform to all motor vehicle safety standards governing HVAC operation.

What You’ll Bring

  • Education background in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Strong understanding of turbulent and laminar flows, attached and separated flows, vortex dynamics and other flow behaviors.
  • Excellent engineering fundamentals and use of hand calculations to make quick decisions or validate simulation/test results.
  • Knowledge of advanced surfacing tools to draw high quality CAD aerodynamic surfaces - CATIA preferred.
  • Experience in various types of CFD simulations including RANS, LES, VOF, DEM, CHT and their derivatives.
  • Detailed understanding and experience in numerical modeling, particularly regarding solution accuracy, solver stability and robustness.
  • Strong coding fundamentals to develop physics-based 1D models, deploy and maintain them over time. Python experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrable motivation and ability to solve novel, difficult design problems with tight timing constraints as well as design experience with 10’s-100’s of released component designs.
  • Working knowledge of automotive HVAC systems including compressors, HVAC units, fluid transfer components, and vehicle performance testing.
  • Good knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stampings, and castings.
