The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working on a diverse portfolio of technically challenging projects across the commercial, industrial, healthcare, and data centre sectors.

You will play a crucial role across the entire project lifecycle, from initial concept through to detailed design and commissioning. This permanent role offers the platform to deepen your expertise in automation and smart systems, driving integration with our ICT, Mechanical, Electrical, and Digital teams. It is a chance to move beyond routine tasks and make a tangible impact on the operational efficiency and sustainability of the built environment.

As a Building Control Systems Engineer at Arup, you will:

  • Design and optimise Building Management Systems (BMS) and HVAC control strategies to maximise building performance across various sectors, with a particular focus on mission-critical data centres;
  • Collaborate closely with Mechanical, Electrical, ICT, Smart Buildings, and Digital teams to deliver seamless, fully integrated "Total Architecture" solutions;
  • Drive the integration of BMS, EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems), and HVAC systems into the overall building design, ensuring rigorous compliance with relevant project requirements and industry standards;
  • Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including technical specifications, schematics, sequences of operation, and detailed reports;
  • Provide critical commissioning support, participating in site visits and surveys, and witnessing control system commissioning to ensure execution aligns precisely with the design intent.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for a passionate and technically driven engineer who wants to optimize building performance through smart control systems. We also value:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Controls, Mechatronics, Building Services, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering;
  • 3 to 5 years of proven experience in designing building control systems (BMS/BAS/HVAC controls), with strong expertise in HVAC control strategies and building automation;
  • A solid understanding of system integration using standard protocols (such as BACnet and Modbus), alongside experience with DDC systems (basic exposure to PLC systems is highly desirable);
  • Proficiency in relevant engineering and design tools, combined with a working knowledge of industry standards and regulations (ASHRAE, ISO, etc.);
  • Prior experience working on data centre projects is considered a significant advantage.
