As a Closures Glazing Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work with some of the industry’s brightest minds and take engineering ownership of exterior glass systems and their integration into the closure architecture for Tesla vehicles. Your work will focus on the design and development of glazing systems for current vehicle programs, with an emphasis on quality improvement, cost reduction, and manufacturing enhancements. Additionally, you will be responsible for the engineering and design of glazing solutions for future vehicle programs.
Your ownership of glazing systems will include initiating and overseeing both virtual (CAE) and physical testing and analysis to validate new designs from concept to production. This role provides a great opportunity to interface with all aspects of vehicle development. You will work closely with the body, closures, Autopilot, thermal, antenna, mechanisms, interiors, and sealing teams, as well as with manufacturing engineering, to establish world-class glass and trim designs along with world-class assembly processes.
What You’ll Do
Serve as a member of the Vehicle Engineering Team, supporting glazing and closure system development for Tesla vehicles
Conceptualize, design, engineer, and launch components for glazing, seals, and trim products
Collaborate with Autopilot, Thermal, Antenna, Mechanisms, Interiors, and Sealing teams to integrate and package components within each closure
Fully specify glazing designs through the creation of specification drawings and 3D geometry
Initiate CAE studies, interpret results, and iterate designs until performance targets are met
Optimize glazing designs, including heater grids, coatings, and interlayers, to enhance system performance and minimize optical defects
Understand manufacturing processes used to produce glazing components and drive design for high-volume production
Achieve innovation-driven closure system targets for appearance, function, quality, cost, and weight
Establish system-level architecture and functionality based on market research, design feasibility, and prototyping
Participate in the iterative process with the Tesla Design and Styling Studio to deliver the optimal balance of form, function, and quality
Interpret and apply DFM principles and integrate feedback into product designs
Manage and collaborate with key suppliers (both internal and external) to support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience showcasing excellence
Passion for cutting-edge product design and innovation
3+ years of industry experience in consumer product design or a related field
Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5/3DX) for creating complex 3D geometry and 2D drawings
Knowledge of design for manufacturing principles across various commodities
Strong understanding of engineering principles and mechanics of materials with creative problem-solving skills
Experience with advanced manufacturing technologies, particularly related to glazing or ceramics, is preferred
Ability to interpret CAE/NVH results and integrate recommendations into product designs
Strong understanding of GD&T and tolerance analysis
Proven track record of taking mechanical designs from concept through production
Experience collaborating with supply chain partners on mechanism development
Must be proactive in improving processes and driving projects - examples of such initiatives should be provided
