As a Closures Window Regulator Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work with some of the industry’s brightest minds and take full engineering ownership of the window regulator mechanism and its integration with the door system for Tesla vehicles. Your work will focus on designing robust, high-performance regulator systems for current vehicle programs, with an emphasis on quality, cost, weight, and manufacturing efficiency. You will also lead the mechanical design and development of next-generation window regulator architectures for future programs.
Your ownership will include initiating and overseeing both virtual (kinematics, FEA, and multi-body dynamics) and physical testing to validate new designs from concept through production. This role offers a great opportunity to interface across vehicle development. You will work closely with the body, closures, electrical, glass, and interior teams, as well as manufacturing engineering, to deliver world-class window regulator systems and assembly processes.
What You’ll Do
Serve as a member of the Vehicle Engineering Team, owning the mechanical design and development of window regulator systems for Tesla vehicles
Apply strong mechanical engineering fundamentals (kinematics, dynamics, force analysis, and tolerance stack-ups) to create reliable window lift mechanisms
Fully specify regulator designs through the creation of 2D drawings, 3D models, and component specifications
Initiate and interpret CAE studies (kinematics, multi-body dynamics, and structural analysis) and iterate designs until performance targets are met
Select appropriate materials and drive design for mechanisms including motors, cables, tracks, linkages, and glass attachments
Understand manufacturing processes for regulator components and optimize designs for high-volume production and assembly
Achieve innovation-driven targets for window regulator performance, including glass stability, operating effort, noise, durability, cost, and weight
Establish system-level architecture based on vehicle requirements, design feasibility, and prototyping
Interpret and apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFMEA, and DFM principles to ensure robust and manufacturable designs
Manage and collaborate with key suppliers (internal and external) to support vehicle development milestones and prototype/production builds
Participate in cross-functional design reviews and work closely with the design studio to balance form, function, and quality
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, with evidence of exceptional ability
Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with demonstrated application to mechanism design, kinematics, or moving systems
3+ years of experience designing mechanical mechanisms or motion systems (automotive window regulators, seat mechanisms, or similar preferred)
Experience with frameless drop glazing/flush glass systems is a strong plus
Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5/3DX) for creating complex 3D geometry and 2D drawings
Ability to interpret CAE/kinematics results and integrate recommendations into product designs
Strong understanding of GD&T and tolerance analysis
Proven track record of taking mechanical designs from concept through production
Experience collaborating with supply chain partners on mechanism development
Must be proactive in improving processes and driving projects - examples of such initiatives should be provided
