(Senior) Low Voltage Electrical Engineer

(Senior) Low Voltage Electrical Engineer

Tesla

Freiburg, Germany

What to Expect

At Tesla Engineering Germany in Freiburg, we’re building the future of sustainable energy by developing innovative power electronics for energy storage and vehicle charging systems. Join our team to collaborate across different engineering areas, solve meaningful challenges creatively and transfer concepts from initial design, through prototyping and testing into real-world solutions.

This is an opportunity to support key projects, use modern tools, and work in state-of-the-art facilities to create technologies that shape how energy systems evolve. You get to work on advancing power electronics used for Tesla products globally, thereby directly contributing to the acceleration of the world's transition to sustainable energy.

What You’ll Do

  • End-to-end hardware ownership: Specification, architecture, design, simulation, schematic capture, layout supervision, manufacturing support, board bringup, and validation;
  • Design and validate low-voltage control circuits, auxiliary power supplies (flyback, LLC, buck/boost topologies), sensor interfaces, and protection circuitry for power electronics and charging systems;
  • Design relay control circuits, surge protection devices (TVS, MOVs, GDTs), and other protective elements for safety-critical applications;
  • Collaborate with PCB layout, firmware, mechanical, program management, and validation teams to deliver robust, manufacturable designs;
  • Support DSP/microcontroller pin mapping, layout planning, and alignment with software teams on peripheral assignments;
  • Document design requirements, calculations, test procedures, and validation results with clarity and precision;
  • Rapidly iterate designs as requirements and product features evolve.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of hardware design experience, or Master's/PhD with 3+ years; background in EV charging infrastructure, BMS, or power electronics strongly preferred;
  • Strong analog electronics fundamentals: op-amps, transistors (BJT/MOSFET), current/voltage sensing, signal conditioning, and sensor integration;
  • Power supply design expertise: buck, boost, flyback, and LLC converter topologies for board-level and auxiliary power applications;
  • DSP/microcontroller proficiency: pin assignment, peripheral configuration, multi-controller systems, and hardware/firmware interface coordination;
  • Digital communication interfaces: CAN, Ethernet, RS-485, USB, SPI, and I2C — design and implementation in embedded hardware;
  • Protection and switching design: relay selection and control, surge protection devices (TVS diodes, MOVs, GDTs), and isolation/insulation coordination for safety-critical applications;
  • PCB design competency: power/ground planes, thermal management, EMC/EMI optimization, DFT/DFM for medium- to high-volume production, hands-on lab debugging, and familiarity with test automation tools (LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python).
