Robotics Engineer - SLAM & State Estimation

Robotics Engineer - SLAM & State Estimation

Flyability

Paudex, Switzerland

Your role:

As a member of the Autonomy team, you will develop, implement, and optimize real-time SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and state-estimation systems for Flyability’s inspection drones. Your work will focus on achieving robust localization and high-quality mapping in challenging GPS-denied environments.

You will contribute to both algorithm development and system integration, ensuring reliable performance under onboard compute and deployment constraints. The role involves close collaboration with teams across the company and regular testing in real-world field environments.

What you will own:

  • Design, implementation, and optimization of real-time SLAM and state-estimation pipelines for onboard deployment
  • Development of sensor fusion algorithms combining LiDAR, IMU, and camera data
  • Evaluation and debugging of localization and mapping performance in simulation and real-world testing
  • Contributions to mapping and reconstruction pipelines used for inspection outputs (e.g. photogrammetry, digital twins, emerging methods such as Gaussian splatting)
  • Close collaboration with perception, autonomy, and product teams to ensure robust and integrated system performance

Requirements:

Your profile:

  • 5+ years developing SLAM or state-estimation systems in real-world robotics
  • Strong robotics fundamentals: Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, feature extraction and matching, pose graph optimization, and 3D orientation representations (quaternions, Euler angles)
  • Proven track record with place recognition and loop closure detection algorithms
  • Hands-on work with LiDAR, IMU, and camera data, including multi-sensor fusion for robust estimation
  • Application of machine learning techniques to localization or mapping (e.g. learned features, pose networks, depth prediction)
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Rust and Python with solid software engineering practices
  • Familiarity with semantic mapping systems
  • Comfortable debugging complex robotic systems in the field and contributing to real-world testing and deployment
  • Experience with drones or embedded robotic platforms is a plus
  • Fluent in English; French is a plus
