Job Description
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specialising in materials and coatings, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting the construction and delivery of a major nuclear power plant project. Your expertise will drive technical excellence across materials, coatings, and corrosion challenges, directly contributing to our transition towards an Electric Britain.
This is an on‑site role where your skills will support construction teams and technical specialists in a fast‑paced environment. You’ll work closely with subject‑matter experts, gaining exposure to a wide range of engineering disciplines while developing specialist expertise in coating systems, material selection, testing, and corrosion principles. You’ll help deliver meaningful engineering solutions and grow your technical career with guidance from industry leaders.
Responsibilities Include
- Supporting the resolution of complex technical challenges in materials and coatings.
- Reviewing and advising on corrosion modelling, material selection, and coating specifications.
- Preparing technical assessments, justification papers, and engineering documentation.
- Working with construction teams to resolve cross‑discipline queries.
- Ensuring technical decisions meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Supporting the Contract Engineering Lead (CEL) with supplier technical management and assisting the Client in contractual interactions during contract execution - including compliance with schedule, cost, scope, and deliverables.
- Leading contract technical and project meetings.
- Reviewing supplier documents against the technical referential within contractual deadlines, ensuring quality, and coordinating document reviews with wider contributors.
- Producing comment sheets via the dedicated tool, and engaging with the supplier to clarify or resolve comments where needed.
- Reporting internally with RD and the client on progress, risks, issues, and planning to support contract delivery.
- Managing and tracking design risks, contributing to early warnings and variation assessments.
- Managing interfaces with the contractor, the client, and all internal/external stakeholders to ensure contract delivery stays aligned with the engineering schedule and technical specification.
- Coordinating Configuration Management activities, including CTSs, Design Modifications (UKDCs) and Referential Evolution Requests (RERs).
- Organising, coordinating, and monitoring surveillance activities, including drafting the Surveillance Programme Organisation Note and the Annual Surveillance Report.
- Managing modifications, open points, and scope gaps within the contracts, and informing the supplier via CTS submitted to the Client through dedicated tools.
My profile
- Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.
- Experience or knowledge of corrosion modelling for buried and exposed elements (ISO 9223, BS 9295).
- On‑site engineering experience.
- Strong experience in authoring technical documentation.
- Practical experience in material characterisation and testing.
- Evidence of supporting sustainable material selection.
- Proven ability to interpret complex coating documentation and advise on the impact of changes.
- Someone who thrives on cross‑disciplinary problem solving and brings a collaborative, proactive approach to complex engineering challenges.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
- Fluent in English; French is an advantage.
