Senior Controls Design Engineer for Utility Processes

Senior Controls Design Engineer for Utility Processes

Tesla

Grünheide, Germany

This role will require experience from continuous process controls as well as HVAC controls industries. The Gigafactory design team drives to create the factory of the future by overseeing the design of cutting-edge large-scale equipment and utility systems in support of highly innovating manufacturing processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Early equipment concept creation balances product specs, process controls, layout intricacy, costs, quality, and timelines.
  • P&IDs are created for utilities and process machinery.
  • Detailed drawing sets are assembled.
  • Instrumentation is specified, lists (BOQ) compiled, and placement diagrams mapped.
  • Networking architectures and schematic diagrams are outlined.
  • Control/comms wiring is sized and defined.
  • Electrical/electromechanical parts, like valves, solenoids, breakers, starters, and VFDs, are selected and scaled.
  • SOO narratives and functional specs gain input.
  • Tesla guidelines and norms receive contributions.
  • Diverse industrial sensors and devices, such as level, temperature, and pressure transducers, current/power meters, and control valves, are outlined.
  • Vendor RFQs are issued and technical bids reviewed.
  • Tesla protocols are enforced while suppliers are supervised through spec definition, review, and sanctioning.
  • Building and activation phases gain support.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years in industrial controls/automation, with hands-on EPLAN expertise for schematic design and panel layouts as the primary tool. Proven background in utilities (processes, HVAC) or manufacturing, preferably at Gigafactory scale.
  • Proficient in creating detailed electrical schematics, single-line/multi-line diagrams, and cabinet layouts using EPLAN.
  • Skilled in reading, interpreting, and modifying P&ID diagrams for process design and integration, including instrument tagging and loop checks.
  • Experienced in generating BoQ (Bill of Quantities), Cable Lists, IO Lists, SOO (Sequence of Operations), and Cause & Effect Matrices for utility processes and safety interlocks.
  • Expert in selecting and specifying sensors (e.g., pressure, flow, temperature) and actuators like VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), MOVs (Motor Operated Valves), pumps, and field devices for performance and reliability.
  • Strong grasp of process installations (e.g., cooling water systems, piping, heat exchangers) and mechanical system integration (e.g., controls interfacing with pumps, valves, chillers).
  • Familiar with PLC systems (e.g., Siemens S7/TIA Portal) for design integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting – programming not required.
  • Knowledge of German codes and standards (DIN, VDE) and regulations on safety (ATEX, EX), water (WHG), and emissions.
  • Fluent in English; German proficiency is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills for flexible, agile projects.
