Drivetrain Development Engineer - Electric Motor Development

Drivetrain Development Engineer - Electric Motor Development

Rimac Automobili

Zagreb, Croatia

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled, innovative, and experienced Drivetrain Mechanical Development Engineer – Electric Motor Development to join our team. This role focuses on the mechanical design and development of electric motor components for advanced drivetrain systems. You will be responsible for designing, analysing, and optimizing mechanical parts of electric motors, ensuring their performance, reliability, and manufacturability. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to integrate motor components seamlessly into the overall drivetrain system. Experience in electric motor design, mechanical systems, and manufacturing processes is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Design of Electric Motor Components: Lead the mechanical design of electric motor components such as stators, rotors, housings, and cooling systems. Develop and optimize designs from concept through production, ensuring the highest standards of performance, efficiency, and manufacturability.
  • Material Selection & Analysis: Choose appropriate materials for motor components, considering factors such as thermal conductivity, strength, weight, and manufacturability. Perform simulations and mechanical analysis to assess the mechanical integrity of motor parts under various operating conditions.
  • Component Sourcing and Integration: Collaborate with suppliers to source and integrate key motor components. Ensure components meet performance, durability, and cost effectiveness criteria while maintaining compatibility within the overall motor system.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Oversee the creation of prototypes for new motor components. Develop and execute tests to evaluate the mechanical performance of the motor under realworld conditions. Analyse test data to refine designs and improve performance.
  • System Integration and Optimization: Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure seamless integration of motor components within the drivetrain system. Optimize motor design for performance, efficiency, and weight reduction, ensuring that it integrates well with other drivetrain elements such as transmission and power electronics.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed documentation including design specifications, testing protocols, validation reports, and integration procedures. Provide regular updates on project progress, issues, and resolutions to management and other stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement by identifying areas for optimization in motor designs, manufacturing processes, and testing methodologies. Implement corrective actions based on testing feedback and real-world performance data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Proven experience in mechanical design, particularly in electric motor or drivetrain development
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems design, including material selection, thermal management, and vibration analysis
  • Familiarity with electric motor principles such as rotor/stator design, cooling techniques, and electromagnetic interactions
  • Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5 and 3DExperienece)
  • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams, collaborating with electrical and systems engineers
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to present design progress and technical details clearly
  • Highly analytical with excellent problem-solving skills and a drive for continuous improvement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains and associated systems
  • Knowledge of electric motor manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability
  • Familiarity with electric motor testing and validation protocols
  • Experience with performance optimization, including efficiency and weight reduction in electric motor systems
