Sr Compliance Design Engineer, Energy and Charging, EMEA

Sr Compliance Design Engineer, Energy and Charging, EMEA

Tesla

Freiburg, Germany

What to Expect

This role serves as the critical bridge between product design and regulatory compliance. You'll be embedded directly within our Engineering teams, delivering real-time guidance on safety, EMC, interoperability, and performance criteria. You'll define the product's regulatory architecture and design to ensure it's "right first time" from concept.

You'll ultimately facilitate global market access by navigating complex regulations that often don't directly address emerging technologies.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as the embedded compliance expert within the hardware and software architecture and design teams, providing direct, hands-on support from concept through to product realization;
  • Translate complex safety (e.g., IEC/EN 62368-1, IEC/EN 61851) and EMC (e.g., IEC/EN 61000 series) standards into practical, actionable design guidelines for engineers;
  • Conduct early-stage design reviews, risk assessments, and pre-compliance analysis to identify and mitigate potential issues before prototypes are built;
  • Advise on component selection, circuit design, layout strategies (e.g., creepage/clearance, grounding, filtering), and mechanical enclosure design to ensure inherent compliance;
  • Liaise with Nationally Recognized bodies to perform joint reviews and gain regulatory design consensus, in addition to developing a homologation plan;
  • Collaborate with the Compliance Project Management team by providing deep technical insights on the product design;
  • Develop and maintain internal design guides, best practices, and training materials to elevate the baseline compliance knowledge across the engineering organization.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent;
  • Proven experience in electronics design (e.g., power electronics, analog/digital circuits, PCB layout) is essential;
  • Combined with several years experience in a product compliance role, with a strong desire to focus on the design-integration aspect of compliance;
  • Expert-level knowledge of product safety standards applicable to Energy and Charging products, particularly UL 1741/UL 9540/IEC 62477-1/IEC 62109-1/2 & IEC 62933 series (BESS), and UL 2202/UL 2594/IEC/EN 61851 series (EVSE);
  • Deep, practical understanding of EMC principles and standards, including the IEC 61851-21-1, IEC/EN 61000 series, FCC part 15 & 18, and the application of the EMC and Radio Equipment Directives (RED) including cyber security;
  • Hands-on experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence) is highly desirable;
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex regulatory concepts into clear and concise engineering requirements and design solutions;
  • Understanding the physics/first principle rationales for the relevant regulatory requirements;
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as an integrated member of a fast-paced design team.
