THE ROLE

The Senior Materials Specialist plays a key role in the qualification and verification of materials for Saltfoss Energy’s molten salt reactor program. This role is central to demonstrating that selected materials meet stringent design and performance requirements. Working cross-functionally with engineering and R&D teams, the specialist designs and oversees experimental campaigns, both internal and external, focused on the behaviour of materials exposed to molten salts under static and dynamic conditions. The position involves defining test objectives, validating material specifications, and ensuring that results directly support reactor design and licensing efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

  • Verify and validate design requirements related to materials by designing and conducting experiments to assess materials performance, particularly regarding combinations of mechanical stress and corrosion.
  • Lead materials qualification and specification for components in the seaMSR-100 that are exposed to molten salts and/or irradiation.
  • Investigate and support through literature studies and experimental work in areas such as, but not limited to, stress corrosion cracking, welding, thermal aging, creep, irradiation damage, erosion, and molten salt corrosion.
  • Identify relevant codes and standards for research activities and ensure compliance of research with these standards.
  • Manage projects with external partners, including identifying and contacting suitable partners, scoping the work and managing the progress of projects to completion.
  • Keep informed of global developments in nuclear materials selection, attend workshops and webinars if required and establish and support collaborations with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

  • You have a Master’s degree or higher education within materials science, engineering, or similar education.
  • You have 5-10 years of industrial experience with experimental project work and materials selection in an R&D organization.
  • You can identify, analyze, and solve complex problems related to materials.
  • You can manage projects effectively, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Experience with molten salt chemistry is an advantage.
  • Experience working with materials for nuclear applications is an advantage.

PERSONAL COMPETENCIES

  • You effectively collaborate with your colleagues to solve technical and operational challenges.
  • You have a high sense of responsibility and accountability.
  • You have good organizational and time-management skills and can handle multiple tasks in parallel.
  • You are comfortable planning at multiple time horizons: from single test campaigns to multi-year materials qualification programs.
  • You are dedicated and used to producing quality work of the highest standard and reproducibility.
  • You are willing to learn, and help develop a growing team.
