Lead Protection Engineer

Lead Protection Engineer

GE Vernova

Tampere, Finland

Job Description Summary

We are looking for a Lead Protection Engineer to work in our Tampere‑based engineering Center of Excellence for FACTS (STATCOM & SVC) solutions. The role focuses on designing, setting, and testing protection systems for medium‑voltage and high‑voltage applications that enable reliable operation of modern power grids.

You will combine protection principles with system‑level understanding to deliver robust solutions that support grid stability and the ongoing energy transition.

Job Description

This role is suited for an engineer with a strong interest in protection engineering and in designing protection systems that enable stable and reliable operation of modern medium‑voltage grids. It involves translating system‑level understanding into robust, selective, and testable protection schemes, with technical ownership from concept through commissioning. The ideal candidate is curious, self‑driven, and motivated to continuously develop expertise in protection relays, tools, and evolving grid technologies.

What You Will Do

As part of a skilled and supportive protection engineering team, you will:

  • Design protection concepts for FACTS applications for medium‑voltage and high‑voltage substations
  • Calculate and validate protection settings based on:
    • Short‑circuit studies
    • Equipment characteristics
    • Grid topology and operational philosophy
  • Configure and test protection relays from multiple manufacturers
  • Analyze fault behavior and define appropriate protection functions and coordination
  • Plan and participate in:
    • Factory acceptance testing (FAT)
    • Site testing and commissioning support
  • Produce and review high‑quality technical documentation
  • Participate in technical discussions with customers, project teams, and suppliers
  • Support sales, R&D, and standardization activities with protection expertise
  • Contribute to commissioning of FACTS equipment (STATCOM, SVC)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering/Power Systems
  • Solid understanding of power system protection principles
  • Knowledge of:
    • Medium voltage systems
    • Fault current behavior and short‑circuit calculations
    • Core protection functions (overcurrent, earth fault, differential)
  • Ability to analyze problems systematically and work with incomplete data
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Willingness to travel occasionally

Considered a Strong Advantage

  • Experience with protection of:
    • Transformers
    • Reactors
    • Capacitor banks
    • Busbars
  • Hands on experience with protection relay configuration or testing
  • Ability to create protection panel schematic drawings using Engineering Base or similar design tools
  • Familiarity with different relay vendors or protection philosophies
  • Finnish or other additional languages

Who You Are

  • Genuinely interested in protection engineering, not just automation
  • Self oriented and willing to take technical ownership
  • Curious and motivated to learn unfamiliar tools and technologies
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Analytical, structured, and able to explain technical decisions clearly
  • Pragmatic mindset with a “make it work and make it right” attitude
  • Enjoy working in an international, multicultural environment
