Powertrain Mechanical Design Engineer
Beyond Aero
Toulouse, France
About the role
We are seeking a mechanical design engineer with proven experience in the design and integration of turbomachinery in aircraft engines. The ideal candidate will possess an excellent understanding of the physical constraints related to the integration of engine components (volume, weight, vibration, loads…), as well as good awareness of certification requirements. As a Powertrain Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work closely with the Lead Propulsion Engineer.
Valuable member of the team your role will be:
- Evaluate different physical arrangements of the engine components (fan, gearbox, cooling pumps, e-motor…), considering inputs from different teams;
- Estimate component dimensions and masses using the most appropriate method at each stage of the development (hand calculations, semi-empirical methods, supplier data, detailed simulation, etc.);
- Prepare technical requirements for suppliers and participate in meetings with suppliers;
- Integrate individual engine components into the larger engine assembly, taking into account all the relevant physical constraints (vibration, thermal, electrical, clearances, etc.);
- Work in close coordination with Propulsion structural engineers to optimize the design of the structural elements within the engine;
- Liaise with the manufacturing and operations teams to address producibility and maintainability solutions;
- Participate in design reviews and safety reviews;
- Track engine component weights and update the e-BOM;
- Deliver the CAD design of the engine, including sub-systems and components;
- Compile and deliver all the documentation associated with the mechanical design (drawings, checklists…).
The mission will be successful if Beyond has a robust, certifiable, and efficient hydrogen-electric propulsion system ready for the entry into service of the aircraft.
About you
- You have a Master’s or PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field with focus on Propulsion Systems;
- You are proficient in CAD modelling and product configuration;
- You have at least 5 years of experience on mechanical design and physical integration of aerospace propulsion systems or similar high-performance rotating machinery;
- You have a proven experience on at least one aircraft engine Program (e.g. turbofan, turboprop, electric, hybrid);
- You have knowledge of Hydrogen-Electric or Hybrid-Electric powertrain components (fan, gearbox, cooling pumps, e-motor, etc.) and of certification requirements applicable to aircraft engines (e.g. CS-E, SC E-19);
- You have a holistic approach to mechanical design, with a good understanding of how design choices affect the overall weight and dimensions of the Propulsion system;
- You are autonomous, curious, and a good team player;
- You are able to challenge existing process and your management in a spirit of continuous improvement;
- You have an experience in a multi-cultural environment and understand international diversity.
