Mechanical Research Engineer
ARQUIMEA Research Center
Tenerife, Spain
We are looking for a Mechanical Research Engineer: The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in mechanical design, design for manufacturing (DFM), and low to mid-volume production, ideally with some knowledge in the field of robotic devices, particularly in battery-powered, highly-dynamic mobile systems.
Tasks to be performed:
- Design and develop mechanical subsystems for robotic platforms, emphasizing performance, reliability, and manufacturability;
- Apply FEA tools to assess structural integrity, fatigue life, thermal performance, and dynamic behavior (CFD experience is a strong plus);
- Analysis of the SOTA in robotic control algorithms and methods;
- Select and validate COTS components for actuation, sensing, and structural applications;
- Collaborate with electrical and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with sensors, actuators, and control electronics;
- Lead and support DFM activities, including vendor interactions, tolerance analysis, and production documentation for low to mid-volume manufacturing;
- Build and test prototypes to validate performance and inform design iterations;
- Contribute to design reviews, project planning, and risk assessments;
- Stay informed about emerging materials, manufacturing techniques, and robotics trends.
Required skills, experience and candidate profile:
- Relevant degree in Mechanical Engineering (MsC/PhD), Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field;
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design for robotics or complex electromechanical systems;
- Defining Requirements at the system level. Understanding the implications of multidisciplinary requirements and monitor progress through conventional tools, such as FMEA;
- Demonstrated experience in low to mid-volume manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC machining, injection molding, 3D printing, sheet metal, etc.);
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo) and FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, Abaqus);
- Strong track record in DFM, including BOM management, tolerance stack-ups, and cost-effective design;
- Solid experience in electronics integration, including housing design for PCBs, wiring, connectors, and thermal considerations;
- Excellent understanding of mechanical materials and fasteners, seals, bearings, gears, and kinematics.
Additionally, we will also value experience in the following areas:
- Proven track record of working in a research-oriented environment;
- Experience working with agile methodologies is desired;
- Basic understanding of electronics, software, and its role/impact in complex systems and the constraints imposed in mechanical devices;
- Data-driven, analytical mindset. Open to challenges;
- Detail-oriented person, with experience working in agile development environments, especially when focused to product hardware development;
- We are also looking for a good person, someone who thrives working in multidisciplinary and ever-changing environments;
- Proficient in English;
- The candidate must be eligible to work in the EU.
