Job Description Summary
At Dowty (a GE Aerospace company) we have an exciting permanent opportunity to join our onsite team at our cutting edge manufacturing site in Brockworth, Gloucestershire. You'll be supporting the Material and Process (M&P) team in all aspects related to metals and metallic components. This would involve but not be limited to, providing technical expertise in the selection, testing, analysis, and performance evaluation of metallic materials and processes.
As our M&P engineer you'll support the production, design, and quality teams by ensuring that materials and treatments meet engineering, safety, and regulatory requirements. In addition you'll be problem solving within our external supplier chain to prevent any line stops at Dowty, enabling us to meet our project deadlines on time, every time.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct metallurgical analysis, including microstructural examination, hardness testing, and failure investigation;
- Evaluate material properties and performance to ensure compliance with relevant specifications and standards (e.g., ASTM, AMS, ISO);
- Support the development and qualification of new materials, coatings, and heat treatment processes;
- Provide technical guidance on material selection, corrosion prevention, and manufacturing methods;
- Prepare detailed metallurgical reports and present findings to engineering and quality teams;
- Support root cause investigations of material- or process-related non-conformances;
- Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality departments to resolve technical issues and improve product reliability;
- Maintain awareness of new developments in materials science, manufacturing processes, and industry standards;
- Ensure all metallurgical work complies with applicable health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (BEng/BSc) in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related engineering discipline (with metallurgy/material knowledge) is essential;
- Workplace experience in metallurgical engineering is highly desirable, preferably in a related industry, e.g., aerospace/manufacturing;
- Strong understanding of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, heat treatment, and material failure mechanisms;
- Experience with metallographic preparation, microscopy, and analytical techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS, XRF);
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g., AMS, ASTM, ISO, NADCAP);
- Proficient in technical report writing and interpretation of engineering drawings/specifications;
- Competent in root cause analysis and problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, FMEA).
