System Design Engineer (BESS)

What you will do:
- Lead early-stage technical design for large-scale BESS projects across Europe;
- Produce/review SLDs, mechanical layouts, and technical descriptions for authorities;
- Translate Axpo technical standards into robust early design packages;
- Coordinate and quality-assure external engineering partners across jurisdictions;
- Optimize designs for safety, compliance, cost, and constructability; standardize realization;
- Prepare permit-ready documentation and inputs for grid and authority interactions;
- Align scope, risks, and timelines with country developers, realization engineering, and management;
- Identify design risks and mitigations; document key technical decisions and assumptions;
- Build a BESS technology hub: capture lessons learned; standardize templates/specs/workflows;
- Support handover into procurement and construction; provide follow-through technical support;
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders; travel to BESS sites in Germany and across Europe as needed.
What you bring & who you are:
- Must-have: Degree in electrical, mechanical, energy engineering, or related; or state-certified technical engineer or UAS background;
- Must-have: Deep understanding of BESS technology; strong early-design decision facilitation balancing tech, cost, schedule, permitting;
- Must-have: Ability to manage and assure quality of external engineering in multi-country settings;
- Must-have: Attention to detail, structured documentation habits, and an independent, proactive working style;
- Must-have: Fluent English; strong interpersonal skills for pan-European collaboration;
- Nice-to-have: Knowledge of contract frameworks for construction and operations; proficiency in another European language;
