Mechanical Design Engineer - Gas Turbines

Mechanical Design Engineer - Gas Turbines

Destinus

Hengelo or Madrid

Description

You stand at the forefront of gas turbine innovation, where your designs are the backbone of cutting-edge propulsion systems. We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our gas turbine development team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and optimization of advanced gas turbine engines, focusing on critical components such as mixed-flow compressor stages (centrifugal and axial), high-speed rotor shafts, and advanced bearing systems. Expertise in material behavior under high thermal and mechanical stresses, precision tolerancing for high-speed assemblies, and design for manufacturability is essential. The candidate should also possess the capability to perform stress analyses to evaluate and enhance component integrity, with knowledge of rotordynamics considered advantageous.

At Destinus, we are revolutionizing the defense industry with cutting-edge Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Our innovative technologies are designed to meet the unique demands of modern defense operations, delivering unparalleled speed, precision, and cost effectiveness. Destinus partners with government agencies and defense organizations worldwide to provide advanced solutions for mission-critical operations, enabling a new era of efficiency and technological superiority. Join us in shaping the future of defense with groundbreaking aerospace innovations.

What You’ll Do

Design & Development

  • Design and optimize gas turbine components, including mixed centrifugal and axial compressor stages, rotor shafts, and bearing systems, ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Analyze and address the thermomechanical behavior of materials under extreme operating conditions to guide material selection and design decisions.
  • Define and implement precise tolerances, fits, and clearances to ensure performance and manufacturability of high-speed assemblies.
  • Incorporate design for manufacturability and assembly principles into all stages of the design process.

Analysis & Validation

  • Perform stress analyses to assess structural integrity and reliability of components under thermal and mechanical loads.
  • Collaborate with testing teams to validate designs, interpret test results, and make iterative improvements.
  • Use analytical tools such as FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to supplement design decisions when needed.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Partner with aerodynamics, materials, and manufacturing teams to align designs with performance and production goals.
  • Generate detailed technical documentation, including CAD models, engineering drawings, and design reports.
  • Contribute to design reviews, presenting technical insights and rationale for engineering decisions.

Requirements

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and development of gas turbines or high-performance rotating machinery.
  • Strong understanding of material properties and behavior in high-temperature, high-stress environments.
  • Proficiency in precision tolerancing, fits, and mechanical design principles for rotating assemblies.
  • Experience performing stress analyses and interpreting results to inform design improvements.
  • Knowledge of rotordynamics and high-speed bearing systems for turbomachinery is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX), use of FEA tools is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and assembly techniques for gas turbines.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices in gas turbine design and validation.
