At Tomson Consulting Ltd., we’re looking for an experienced Sustainability Engineer to join our team. You’ll play a key role in delivering sustainability engineering projects and decarbonisation solutions while helping our clients reduce their carbon footprint across various sectors.

Our team works on cutting-edge projects, including heat abstraction from minewater, energy systems for food & drink, agricultural, and public sectors. Key Responsibilities

  • Leading technical design work for heat network feasibility studies, including building electrification and decarbonisation;
  • Managing and delivering carbon management plans and conducting energy assessments to identify and implement cost-effective energy-saving measures;
  • Providing technical expertise in the development of Energy Master Plans, Decarbonisation Plans, and low carbon energy systems;
  • Designing and modelling energy solutions, including low-carbon heating systems, energy centres, and CHP;
  • Providing planning approval and construction administration;
  • Developing custom spreadsheets and models for energy calculations and carbon performance analyses;
  • Overseeing the preparation of tender submissions and proposals to secure new projects;
  • Supporting junior staff and ensuring quality assurance for technical work;
  • Reporting project progress to senior management and contributing to business development activities.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline;
  • At least 5 years’ experience in mechanical/electrical engineering with a focus on commercial building design, decarbonisation, building electrification, and low carbon energy solutions;
  • Proven experience in delivering energy projects with a strong understanding of thermal energy generation systems, wet and dry heating system design, and building electrification;
  • Experience in consultancy or construction projects within decarbonisation and energy sectors;
  • Knowledge of building energy demand and carbon performance, with practical experience in delivering solutions to RIBA stages;
  • Strong understanding of Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions management and carbon reporting;
  • Competence with Excel and other technical tools;
  • Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects;
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to build client and colleague relationships;
  • A positive, solution-oriented attitude with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in heat network mapping, feasibility studies, and carbon management within the MEP sector;
  • Knowledge of EnergyPro or similar modelling software;
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, CAD, GIS software, or similar tools;
  • People management experience;
  • A desire to mentor junior staff;
  • Experience working in the agricultural, horticultural, or food and drink sectors.

Working Arrangements

We offer a flexible hybrid working model. Staff in Sheffield are encouraged to come to the office at least one day a week, while the rest of the week can be worked from home. Staff based in Scotland will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in Glasgow co-working spaces on an ad-hoc basis.

Remote working is an option, although there may be requirements to go on site visits in and around UK (mostly England).
