Copernicus Systems Engineer
EUMETSAT - European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites
Darmstadt, Germany
We are currently looking for an experienced Ground Segment Systems Engineer to join our international team of inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector.
This role is rooted in EUMETSAT’s mission and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society!
BACKGROUND
The Copernicus Ground Segment System Engineer will be the technical authority for ground segments and system aspects in operational Copernicus programmes, maintaining and developing cutting edge technologies and constellations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating system engineering activities aimed at developing, maintaining and evolving ground systems for EUMETSAT and Copernicus missions exploited by EUMETSAT on behalf of the European Commission.
Specifically, the position will support and coordinate the ground segment and system level engineering regarding Sentinel 4 and 5 missions, which are instruments hosted on MTG and EPS-SG platforms and contribute to the Copernicus programme. MTG and EPS-SG are the most complex and innovative meteorological GEO and LEO satellite systems ever built, providing near-real-time data of important characteristics of the atmosphere. The successful candidate will work in a team of system engineers, and interacts with GEO, LEO and Copernicus teams in Operations and in Engineering.
DUTIES
- Provide coordinated engineering support required to maintain operational ground systems and upgrade systems in response to evolving requirements, including maintenance of system level documentation and architectural models, specifically for multi-mission infrastructure services;
- Analyse specifications and impacts on system architecture and interfaces for evolutions or major upgrades to operational ground systems, in order to ensure overall systems-coherence;
- Define the integration, verification, validation and testing approach for evolutions or major upgrades, and coordinate/implement testing, including support to the installation and integration of new components;
- Support coordination with external partners (e.g. ESA, European Commission, NOAA, ECMWF, Mercator-Ocean) on ground segment engineering activities and interfaces;
- Perform technology and trend analysis on enterprise architectures, emerging technologies and assess their implications for EUMETSAT and Copernicus missions and systems and interfaces with external partners;
- Support the transition of newly developed ground segments into Operations at system level, including support to installation and integration, verification and validation testing.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
- Excellent salary, of up to Euro 7,500 NET (after tax) based on skills and experience;

- 30 days of annual leave + 14.5 days public holidays;
- Training and development support;
- Relocation allowance and support (if applicable).
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience in coordinating/managing ground segment system engineering services or teams involved in operations of satellite systems, and specifically in the area of multi-mission infrastructure services;
- Solid experience in the engineering, integration, verification, validation (IV&V) and maintenance of ground segment systems, preferably for Earth observation missions;
- Proficiency and experience in the definition and implementation of engineering processes for sustaining, maintaining and evolving operational ground systems;
- Some experience in Model Based Systems Engineering methods and knowledge of relevant system engineering standards and of methods for requirements/specification management and verification, with experience in the use of related tools would be an advantage;
- Strong planning, analysis and presentation skills, coupled with a high-degree of interpersonal awareness;
- Excellent communication skills and experience working as part of team.
