Job Description

The successful management candidate will lead all the activities related to Materials Engineering for Polymers Business Unit within HP P3D. This include both the R&D team for development and integration of new polymeric powder materials and also the Product Engineering team responsible for the current Polymeric Materials already in the market. They will also directly lead the team of material scientist and engineers to develop polymeric powder materials for integration into HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology.

The manager will interface closely with internal partners and external suppliers to design, scale and manage quality of powder materials that meet final part application and system requirements within the NPD and the current product phases. They will also lead the team of technologist to identify and deliver improvements to existing materials and manufacturing technology in the space of process robustness and cost reduction to expand MJF application adoption.

Key Responsibilities

As Head of Material Engineering:

  • Provides direct and ongoing leadership for an organization of multiple subordinate managers and individual contributors designing and developing polymer materials and managing projects utilizing multiple engineering disciplines for;
  • Define together with product Management and Business Unit leader the strategy for Powder Materials serving the Polymers BU;
  • Define together with product Management and Business Unit leader the roadmap of powder products to develop for the Polymers business;
  • Together with the Head of Technology and R&D, define and manage the processes for development, integration, and Product Engineering within the Polymer System Development and Enginering;
  • Make sure there are staffing and budget plans that support the product roadmap and current products in the field. Manage the budget to meet spend guidelines in a quarterly basis;
  • Manages relationships with outsourced partners and suppliers, including setting expectations regarding deliverables, product quality, schedules, and costs; ensures that team members are effectively communicating and collaborating with outsourced resources;
  • Manage and keep an engaged and talented workforce fostering diversity and collaborative environment.

As Manager of the Powder Development team:

  • Lead a technical team to invent, demonstrate, and deliver polymer powders and technology for the 3D business;
  • Interface between the various program teams, R&D, supplier management and external supplier development and manufacturing teams;
  • Direct the work of scientists and engineers to develop new materials and drive resolution of critical issues to enable successful PDP and NPI checkpoints. Regularly communicate progress, risks, and mitigation strategies at program checkpoints and technical reviews to the executive team;
  • Manage program schedules, budget, and headcount allocation in accordance with 3D business objectives;
  • Drive employee engagement, develop, coach and support employees at all levels to foster a high-performance culture;
  • Hire and develop effective and engaged employees;
  • Establish and oversee the operations of the material testing and characterization laboratory.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical sciences; MS/PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics preferred;
  • 5+ years leading technical project teams and/or engineers of diverse fields, 5+ years of people management experience preferred;
  • Prior experience in 3D and/or Product Development preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced leadership skills, including coaching, teambuilding, conflict resolution, and management;
  • Advanced project management skills including time and risk management, resource prioritization, and project structuring;
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Experienced in managing human capital across geographies to drive workforce development and achieve desired results;
  • Advanced communication skills catered to a wide variety of audiences. (e.g. written, verbal, presentation); mastery in English and local language;
  • Superior business acumen, technical knowledge, and industry experience encompassing one or more engineering, technology, and product domains;
  • Advanced multi-tasking and prioritization skills;
  • Advanced relationship management skills, including partnering and consulting;
  • Strong understanding of HP's policies and processes.
