The Airbus Landing Gear Centre of Engineering is looking for new team members to join them at their Bristol Office in Filton as a Landing gear design Specialist.

The role is located within the Engineering Technical Excellence Organisation ILTE which is the home of the Specialists and Experts covering all aspects of the ATA32 product, from avionics, Wheels, Tyres & Brakes, Extension Retraction Systems, Braking Systems, Installations and of course Landing Gear Design.

The role provides an opportunity to significantly influence landing gear and aircraft decision making and involves all aspects of engineering design for Landing Gear, encompassing product subjects from Aircraft-to-Landing Gear compatibility, Shock Absorber design, Structural and Mechanical Design through Hydraulic Actuators, and Hydraulic/Electrical equipment qualification and installation. This will be applied to all landing gear types across the complete Airbus product family of aircraft (A320Family, A330, A350, A380 & R&T). Within the Landing Gear technical organisation it is designated as a Technical Principal (TP) role.

You will report functionally to the Head of ILTE and will be called upon to advise and guide landing gear engineers in all of the commercial aircraft programmes. This guidance can range from steering new Major Developments and R&T work to Product Safety/Continued Airworthiness occurrence assessment, guidance on Major in Service Problem (MISPs) & Major Mods, Continuous Product Development (CPD) and development of skills in people at all levels of Landing Gear Engineering.

You will be working with other Senior & Principal ATA32 Engineers, Experts, Specialists Certification Specialists and Design Organisation Approval (DOA) Level 1 & 2 signatories along with the ATA32 systems and equipment suppliers to ensure the development of landing gear solutions which are fully integrated with the other ATA32 equipment as well as other Aircraft ATA chapters.

If not already a DOA L1 signatory for Landing gears, you will be expected to develop this signatory privilege quickly and then progressively expand it across the Airbus landing gear products via an active development plan. It will also be necessary to supplement this with signature privileges granted from outside engineering, eg CVE.

You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).

Main Tasks/Activities:

  • Technically steer & approve direction of landing gear developments for new projects, existing products and R&T projects. Work with Technical Principals, Lead Engineers and Heads of Activity to define and deliver cross-discipline optimised technical solutions and strategy for new modifications and product development;
  • Review and approve key project documents: Product Development Plans, Validation and Verification Plans, Requirements Managements Plans, TLLSDD, SRD, DDP, Certification Summary, etc.;
  • Ensure agreement/validation of ATA32 technical and certification requirements. Ensure a robust understanding and cascade of all technical requirements to landing gears. Ensure that all necessary work is undertaken to the required quality and using authorised processes and methods, to demonstrate compliance with those requirements;
  • Ensure adherence to applicable airworthiness regulations and directives (EASA, FAA, FATA), identify the overall assumptions and means of compliance to be used in certification, raising timely awareness of any potential compliance risks;
  • Ensure effective discipline governance through participation in design and maturity reviews (as a panel member), trade studies, design quality investigations and R&T reviews;
  • Engage the broad expert and specialist community (e.g. Modelling & Simulation, Materials & Processes) to achieve optimum technical and business solutions;
  • Create a robust set of landing gear design guides, standards and best practices as well as ensuring robust approach to knowledge capture (incl best practices and lessons learnt);
  • Ensure that in-service, engineering or supplier originated findings are prioritised for Safety implications, are fully investigated and understood and that any consequent recommendations are acted upon so that the in-service and future products benefit from every occurrence outcome;
  • Engage with engineers in the working teams to direct and approve working documents when the project requires (exercising DOA privilege);
  • Act as mentor/coach and develop the deployed technical teams with IL - new starts, DOA L2 & L1. Act as a role model for clarity and decisiveness in design decision making for Landing Gear engineers aspiring to be Principal Engineers;
  • Work with IL Heads-of-Activity to identify project resource requirements, both numerical and expertise;
  • Search out and judiciously champion new technology in landing gear design and manufacture.

Expected competences, experience and skills

  • Educated to degree level in Engineering or a related discipline;
  • A strong background in details of landing gear or mechanical design, hydraulic equipment and systems design;
  • Experience of leading mechanical design activities both with a direct team and an indirect supplier (internal or external);
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, with a track record of delivery of successful technical solutions balanced with realistic recognition of the importance of Time and Cost to programme objectives;
  • Experience in End-to-End New Product Development or Modifications Process;
  • Overview understanding of common materials and protective coatings used on landing gears;
  • Understanding of key process steps to manufacture and assemble principal landing gear components;
  • Working knowledge of ABD0100 & ABD0200;
  • Understanding of MBSE methodology and Structural Static & Fatigue analysis methods would be advantageous;
  • Capacity to keep focus on what matters and establish clarity of direction in members of the team is vital;
  • Strong communication skills in both verbal and written English.
