An exciting opportunity for an Optical Engineer has arisen within our Space business in the UK. The Optical Engineer is required to define, execute and lead on the required optical design activities and analysis for the development of optical payload architectures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the optical architecture and optical design activities within a specific area of a project, through all stages in the project development lifecycle and in response to technical specifications;
  • Solve issues with optical design;
  • Lead and review detailed optical analyses of space-based sensors;
  • Define the performance allocation between the various component of the optical configurations (telescope, spectrometers, mirrors, filters, optical components…);
  • Interpret customer requirements and define optical system/subsystems architectures and specifications for spacecraft instrumentation;
  • Interface directly with the Customer team, within the framework of project protocols and communication channels, to demonstrate technical competence and credibility in the tasks we are performing;
  • Deliver outputs from assigned project work packages within cost, schedule and quality requirements.

Preferable skills, experience and qualifications:

  • A good understanding of optical design, analyses methods and optical tolerances;
  • Optical design experience with proficiency in relevant optics tools and techniques (such as Zemax or Code V);
  • An appreciation of the key technologies and architectures within imaging optical systems;
  • Experience in stray light analysis, polarisation analysis, optical sensitivity/tolerancing, hyperspectral design desirable;
  • 5 years of heritage working on optical instrumentation, preferably for space-based sensor systems;
  • Degree qualified or equivalent in a relevant field.
