Context & Job description

The Instrumentation Services and Development Division (ISDD) is responsible for the development, design, construction and support of instrumentation at the ESRF, for both the beamlines and the accelerator complex.

The Detector & Electronics Group provides advice, support, facilities, development capabilities and standard components in the area of detectors and electronic instrumentation for internal clients, and external clients when appropriate. Inside the group, the Electronics Unit (EU) provides consulting, support and development capabilities in the area of electronics required for detectors, beamline instrument control, accelerator control, data acquisition and alike. The team designs and produces optimised electronics and maintains a stock of standard components developed in-house or commercially available.

Your missions will be to:

  • Ensure the smooth operation and optimal performance of the Electronics Unit;
  • Provide the ESRF beamlines and accelerator complex with optimised support in development, improvement and maintenance of electronic instrumentation for control and data acquisition;
  • Contribute to an efficient sharing of resources among the different projects in the Unit and in the ISDD in general and to establish good communication between services.

Your main tasks:

  • Manage the resources of the Electronics Unit, including financial, administrative and technical aspects;
  • Identify, propose and manage instrumentation projects while establishing priorities among the operation activities and R&D projects in a consistent and efficient way;
  • Be aware of the needs of the beamlines and the accelerator in terms of instrumentation and be proactive in the area of detector electronics, instrument control and data acquisition;
  • Keep track of commercial developments and advances in other research centres;
  • Create and/or maintain collaborative links with external institutes involved in electronics instrumentation and development.

Expected profile

  • A higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in Electronics or a related discipline with a solid background in electronics and proven capabilities in the management of technical staff;
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in an area related to support and development of electronic instrumentation, with at least 5 years in charge of staff and project management duties;
  • Sound experience in management of technical projects and personnel;
  • Good knowledge of digital and analog electronics with some experience in scientific instrumentation;
  • A background or acquired skills in some of the diverse key technical areas of the Unit such as advanced instrument control, fast data acquisition, low level signal measurements or FPGA programming;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as well as initiative, autonomy, team spirit and a methodical approach to work;
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise commitments efficiently according to deadlines and milestones;
  • Openness to rapid technology evolution is required;
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

Working conditions

Permanent contract.
