Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Working under the supervision of the Principal Engineer in the production of schematic/concept designs and detailed design calculations within defined project timescales;
  • Liaising with other construction professionals in the development of designs;
  • Undertaking drainage and SuDS designs using MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow;
  • Directing technicians in the production of AutoCAD drawing information and undertaking quality reviews of drawn information prior to issue;
  • Liaising with other disciplines within Curtins (i.e. structures and geo-environmental) to ensure Curtins’ design is fully co-ordinated;
  • Developing relationships with clients and other professionals with the aim of identifying and securing new project opportunities and helping to expand the discipline;
  • Production of flood risk assessments and drainage strategy reports for planning.

Whilst these items are relevant on medium to large projects, where work is managed and co- ordinated by a Principal Engineer, it is envisaged that similar tasks would be undertaken independently on smaller projects.

A successful candidate will also be required to undertake traditional Civil Engineering works and Drainage Strategies, or other reports, letters and general correspondence associated with this work. This is expected to include liaison with Statutory Bodies such as Local Water Authorities, Environment Agency/SEPA or the Local Authority.

Other general roles and responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for the analysis and design of drainage and highways, progressing to overall design;
  • Ability to produce drawings using AutoCAD software;
  • Visiting sites and attending site meetings;
  • Involvement in internal project design meetings, including programming of work;
  • Attend external design meetings with clients and other design team members;
  • Prepare correspondence and reports.

Knowledge:

  • Must hold a relevant degree (ideally 2:1);
  • Holds or is working towards a professional qualification i.e, MICE/AMICE or equivalent;
  • Must be IT literate and technically competent, with experience of civil design software packages such as 3DCivils, TUFLOW and Microdrainage;
  • Must be able to produce reports and technical notes professionally and to a high standard of English;
  • Good understanding of the planning process including agreeing planning conditions and discharging them;
  • An interest and knowledge in Civil 3D software is desirable;
  • Knowledge of flood risk assessments and drainage strategies for planning;
  • Knowledge of Road Construction Consent submissions, with knowledge of Section 56 submissions;
  • Good understanding of industry standards, practices, regulations and health & safety;
  • Experience of generating EIA chapters associated with drainage and hydrology would be beneficial.
