ESS - European Spallation Source ERIC

Lund, Sweden

Ref Platsbanen (ID 8413281)

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Electrical Integration Engineer to the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project.

Description of the project

The NSS Project is managed by the ESS Science Directorate to build the neutron beam facility at the ESS. The scope of the project includes the design and construction of 15 neutron scattering instruments, the neutron transport systems and shielding, and the integration of all systems into an operable neutron science facility. Delivery of ~ 60% of the project scope is managed by In-Kind partners throughout Europe, principally in delivery of the 15 neutron instruments. The NSS project is just beginning on-site installation of the first neutron instruments, and will be engaged in installation of instruments and essential infrastructure (such as the neutron bunker and the electrical power distribution) for a period of at least 6 years.

Main responsibilities

The Electrical Integration Engineer will be a member of the NSS Project Division, reporting directly to the NSS Project Leader. You will work directly with relevant stakeholders to implement the electrical infrastructure for NSS instruments. As main contact person for NSS electrical infrastructure you will be linking ESS internal groups and external instruments design teams of the in-kind partners, as well as interfacing to ESH for electrical safety and quality.

The primary responsibility of the position will be the definition, design, installation, commissioning and documentation of electrical distribution and grounding infrastructure inside and around NSS instruments as well as electrical machine safety. This includes the compilation of standards documents as well as the coordination and supervision of related design works, tendering and installation. Further responsibilities are the provision of standardised power supply panels and the review of related mechanical and electrical design work of the instrument teams.

Qualifications

  • Engineers degree in Electrical Engineering or related;
  • Minimum 8y experience in:
    • Planning of LV power distributions and grounding installations in EMC sensitive areas (medicine, nuclear, science, military etc.);
    • Defining and leading project work packages with definition of tasks and interfaces;
    • Writing and compiling strategic concept & design documents as well as interface and standardisation documents.
  • Experience in machine safety (machine directive + CE) including electrical safety certifications (risk analysis, reports etc.);
  • Experience in supervising installation and commissioning incl. test, certification + handover;
  • Proficient in project planning tools like MS Project;
  • Experience of working in an international environment is essential;
  • Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite;
  • Previous experience in instrumentation in radiation facilities (Neutron Sources, Synchrotrons, Particle Physics Experiments etc.) will be an asset.

To be successful in this position, you need to have excellent planning, engineering and networking skills. You must understand the mechanisms of highly parallelised project work as well as the communication with a multitude of versatile stakeholders. A major success factor lies within your ability for high level, strategic design with a conceptual view on standards and your flexibility to adapt known technical solutions to special NSS requirements. It is vital that you have a strong personal drive and a high level of self-motivation.

The way you relate and network with the instrument teams, meet their expectations and handle setbacks, will be of great importance to reaching the goals of the NSS Project.
